Gegara membaca review dari She Dreams in Fiction, gue jadi tertarik ingin ikut membaca novel ini. Pas udah baca sedikit, baru tahu kalau novel ini mendapat rating tinggi di Goodreads. Tema yang gelap dan berbau kematian selalu menarik, apalagi ditambah pesan bernada ancaman yang direkam di kaset (old school banget</em). Sebagai penggemar novel bernuansa gelap, gue penasaran dengan novel ini. Sambil menunggu AJ sekolah, gue mulai membaca versi ebook novel ini.

Adalah Clay yang mendapat kiriman berupa paket berisi kaset rekaman suara Hannah yang tewas karena bunuh diri. Di dalam kaset tersebut, Hannah menyebutkan who’s who yang berhubungan dengan kematiannya. Seperti yang sudah diduga, Hannah dilecehkan oleh cowok yang pertama kali menciumnya, Justin. Dan Justin bukanlah seorang gentleman seperti Peeta atau bahkan Edward yang banyak digilai cewek-cewek. Justin is a total douche. Kencan sederhana di sebuah taman yang berakhir dengan ciuman biasa dipelintir menjadi sebuah kisah bombastis yang membuat reputasi Hannah juga berubah. Setelah kejadian ciuman di taman, Hannah, si anak baru, menjadi pusat perhatian, bahkan olok-olok teman-temannya. Secarik kertas berisi daftar Hot or Not beredar di kelas Hannah. Tentu saja, Hannah berada dalam daftar hot sedangkan anak baru lainnya, Jessica, berada dalam deretan kolom not. Sebenarnya, Hannah, Jessica, dan Alex adalah anak baru. Tapi, sesama anak baru belum tentu cocok dan bersahabat. Tiap individu punya agenda masing-masing dalam hidupnya.

Rumor yang keluar dari mulut Justin berefek panjang seperti bola salju, dan semakin banyak orang yang terbawa arus dalam lintasan bullying tersebut.

Sambil mendengarkan rekaman Hannah, Clay menapak tilas tempat-tempat yang memiliki nilai historis bagi Hannah. Clay mendapatkan peta berisi coretan-coretan yang menandakan tempat-tempat tersebut, juga orang-orang yang berkontribusi dalam kematian Hannah.

Novel ini bercerita tentang remaja yang frustrasi, tragedi yang melibatkan kematian serta pemerkosaan. My chest felt heavy while reading this novel. Topiknya memang agak ‘berat’ dalam arti melibatkan emosi dan psikis. Gue nggak bisa baca novel ini secara cepat karena harus beristirahat sejenak untuk mengistirahatkan otak dan perasaan.

Narasi yang berpindah-pindah dari suara rekaman Hannah dan Clay membuat novel ini memiliki dua suara. I think Jay is a genius. Tidak semua penulis bisa menulis dengan teknik seperti ini. Inti novel ini sebenarnya sederhana. Berhati-hatilah dalam bertindak dan bersuara, karena efeknya bisa panjang.

Gue antara benci dan kasihan dengan tokoh Hannah. *sorry, no spoiler*. Lalu, endingnya agak melenceng dari perkiraan, namun nggak mengecewakan juga sih.

Pesan novel Thirteen Reasons Why adalah ghosts of the past will always haunt you if you have unresolved problems. And, always listen to both sides of the stories, because the truth will always be in the middle.

You can’t rewrite the past.

The Valentine survey was a two-parter. First, you described yourself. Hair color. Eye color. Height. Body type. Favorite type of music and movie. Then you put a check beside your top three things to do on weekends. Which is funny, because whoever designed the first list forgot to mention drinkibg and sex-which would’ve been the most accurate response for most of our student body.

The wonderful thing about a yearbook photo is that everyone shares the moment with you…forever.

I exhale a tiny laugh and I smile. Whenever I’m out late she makes a sandwich for my school lunch. I always protest and tell her not to, saying I’ll make my own when I get home. But she likes it. She says it reminds her of when I was younger and needed her.
